What to See Between Umbria and Tuscany

Piero della Francesca

Piero della Francesca was an Italian painter and mathematician, widely regarded as one of the most important artists of the Early Renaissance. Born around 1415 in Borgo Sansepolcro, he was known for his mastery of perspective, geometry, and his use of vivid colors.
In Sansepolcro you can visit the birthplace of Piero della Francesca, and just a short walk away is the museum that bears his name, which houses some of the artist’s most important works: The Resurrection, The Mercy Polyptych, and St. Julian.
Heading towards Arezzo, you’ll pass through Monterchi, where you can admire the Madonna del Parto, and upon reaching Arezzo, in the Church of San Francesco, you’ll find The Legend of the True Cross.
Continuing on, following Piero’s travels, you’ll arrive in Florence to see the Diptych of the Dukes of Urbino at the Uffizi Gallery.
In Urbino, you can view The Flagellation and The Madonna and Child with Two Angels at the National Gallery of the Marche.

The historic center, enclosed by medieval walls, features numerous noble palaces, the Aboca Herb Museum, and the Bernardini-Fatti Museum of Ancient Stained Glass.

A few minutes away, you’ll find Anghiari, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, renowned for being the site of the famous Battle of Anghiari, immortalized in a fresco by Leonardo da Vinci.

Other recommended towns to visit include Citerna, Cortona, Città di Castello, Pieve Santo Stefano, Montone, Monte S. Maria Tiberina, and Monterchi, all just a short drive away.
